Meet Jerry Castro
Jerry Castro has long held the position to fight and advocate for the poor and middle class as a former aide to the New York State Attorney General, Community Organizer, Liaison to the New York State Assembly and Executive Director of a non-profit advocacy group in the Bronx.
His experience as an organizer allowed him the opportunity to work with people of different backgrounds addressing issues relating to education, housing, community development, health, immigration and community safety. These efforts, led to the organizing of tenant, parent, and neighborhood groups in the Bronx and Washington DC. Moreover, he organized immigrant groups to know their rights and fight for justice and equality.
As an aide to the State Attorney General’s Office, Mr. Castro, began as a Consumer Frauds Intern at the Harlem Regional office. He then was promoted to be Mediator, which allowed him handling tenant-landlord relation cases and New Yorkers who were victims of deceptive business practices. His successful case management promoted him to be the Director of Community Relations, which entailed reaching out to communities in Upper Manhattan and Bronx County.
Being a liaison to the New York State Assembly, Mr. Castro, was the bridge of communication between the district constituents and the member of the State Assembly. To ensure they were represented and that their voices were heard, he attended meetings, forums and town halls on behalf of the member. As a result of these meetings, he helped constituents navigate city and state agencies to address their issues and concerns.
As an Executive Director of a non-profit advocacy organization, Mr. Castro, formed part of executing a strategic plan to give voice and visibility to a community in the Bronx through civic participation and raising money for a community advocacy center. Furthermore, he joined forces with other organizations and groups demanding justice and improve relationships between the community and police department.
Additionally, Mr. Castro has been appointed be a member of Bronx Planning Board 2 and New York City Department of Youth and Community Development Neighborhood Advisory Board 2 and also served as Vice Chair for Neighborhood Advisory 3.
During hard times through our economy, Mr. Castro’s Neighborhood Benefit Plan seeks to tackle the issues of high unemployment rates of minorities, fight for affordable housing, protect homeowners from predatory lending practices, better education for our children, continue improve relations between city, state agencies with community residents and advocating for immigrant rights.
Mr. Castro is the son of Carmen Cayetano and Jerry Johnson Castro Mejia. A long time resident of the Bronx, he resides in the South Central Section of the Bronx known as Tremont with his family and children. |
