I was at a meeting yesterday, and found out that there are “rumors of invasion” in Milinda a parcel of land owned by the Garifuna People since the eighteen century. Obviously something is seriously  happening, because I went to Milinda on the 4 April 2011 along with Mariano Gotay, Minelio Moreira  Ingrid Gamboa, Izidro Sanchez well known as Fafa, and Mario Ellington {Bencho} found out, that there are indicators and signs to prove that the rumors are “true”  Based on what was seen, there is an agreement for us to take “ACTIONS” by any means necessary, we hope to count on your support, there will be an extraordinary meeting on Saturday 9, 2011, in Barrio Nevago at Luba Awanseruni at 9:00 a.m.

Please feel free to translate into Garifuna and Spanish and spread the message.

During the meeting yesterday, we were able to hear a variety of testimonies from the different participants; one in particular took place a week ago, when a Garifuna brother went to check on a measurement regarding a property. He said to us that his life was threatened by the invaders and their leader. They said to him in Spanish “any blacks, who come here, will have to ask for permission from us, because this is now our property.”

A provisional commission has been elected to initiate a plan of “Action”. The commission will accompany a caravan of Garinagu from Labuga and Puerto Barrios to the capital for the 12th April 2011. This particular date is important to us for many reasons; it will be 214 years since the Garinagu were exiled from St. Vincent to Honduras Central America.
We plan to be in Guatemala, to commemorate Garifuna presence in Central America and to join the efforts of the Garinagu in Honduras. Like our Brothers and Sisters in Honduras, we are still struggling for our basic “human rights” and ironically, we are still fighting for our lands.
To be continued:
